First World Problems

“First World Problem” is a phrase that irritates me. It’s a snide snipe that I find childish. Telling someone that they have a first world problem is the same as saying they are not allowed to be unhappy. Telling someone they have a first world problem is also doing nothing at all to solve the problem.
It’s like this. If you break you leg and I stub my toe, I know that you have it worse. I know your leg hurts and that your life is more difficult. Knowing that doesn’t stop my toe hurting. Should I not be allowed to feel the pain in my toe because yours is worse? Should I not be allowed to say “This hurts,” ever, because yours hurts more? I mean… really?
So give it a rest with the “First World Problem” thing and realise that a problem is a problem to the person experiencing it. It may not the worst thing to ever happen, ever, but that doesn’t make it ‘not a problem’. Try having some compassion and empathy instead of trotting out the latest fashionable version of “At least you’re not a diseased and starving kid in Africa.”
